Helicopter Functionality Simplified

What is the difference between infrared and radio controlled toys?

Remote controlled toys communicate through either ‘infrared’ (IR) or ‘radio controlled’ (RC).

Infrared Control (I/R)

Infrared toys operate in a similar way to a TV or DVD remote control by sending commands from a transmitter through an infrared light beam. The operational range is around 10 metres and the transmitter must be in line of sight from the toy. Infrared is excellent for indoor toys and safer for young children as there is no extendable aerial, the controls are smaller in size plus the frequency can be changed via the handset to A, B or C so no need to purchase different frequencies.

Radio Controlled (R/C)

Radio control toys operate on a specific radio frequency, which is sent from the controller to a receiver inside the toy, in a similar way to FM or AM radio stations. Radio controlled handsets have an extended operating range of around 30 meters which makes it ideal for outdoor use. R/C handsets are typically larger in size and offer a higher level of performance and controllability for the intermediate level user.

What is two channel and three-channel flight?

Standard toy helicopters are usually 2- or 3-channel models and aimed at beginners and intermediate level pilots

A 2-channel helicopter has two functions. Throttle (up/down) and turning (left/right). The left control joystick moves upwards to increase and downwards to decrease throttle. The right control joystick will control both left and right movements of the helicopter.

A 3-channel helicopter has the same functions as a 2 channel helicopter enabling the helicopter to fly up/down, left/ right but with the additional control for forward, backwards and hover. This gives the pilot the ability to flying in any direction.

What are trim controls?

Trim controls assists in maintaining a stable flight, preventing the helicopter from uncontrolled spinning. Infrared I/R controllers generally only have one trim to counteract spinning, however radio controlled R/C models can have up to three trim controls to adjust forward/back, left/ right and throttle power.

What is a GYRO?

The G-Bladez Range has a built in gyro, which is a small device that detects any left or right swinging (yaw) movement of the helicopter. This automatically sends a command to the rotor servo to correct the yaw movement giving pinpoint accuracy and making the G-Bladez range one of the easiest helicopters to fly on the market.
